FREE CHESS EVENTS on Saturday October 14 for National Chess Day. This day was designated by President Ford in 1976, "To give special recognition to a game that generates challenge, intellectual stimulation, and enjoyment for citizens of all ages." The Sarasota area chess community is sponsoring a Chess Day on October 14, 2017 from 1:30 – 4:30PM at the Fruitville Library. There will be several events:
- A rapid chess tournaments featuring 6 of the top players in the area. Led by the Hleb Zharkov, winner of many events in US and France
- A national master and international player, Han Schut will play a simultaneous exhibition (one expert player facing a large number of challengers on separate boards, all at once)
- A youth rapid tourney will be held
- Rick Knowlton, the co-author of A World of Chess: Its Development and Variations through Centuries and Civilization will give a talk about this book
- Officers of the newly formed Sarasota/Venice chess club will be available to discuss our plans for chess tournaments, casual play and lessons
- A raffle will be held for free chess books and sets.
- Refreshments will be served
Please come, bring a friend, a set and be ready for a game. [If you'd like to be in one of the tournaments, please make sure to arrive a little early.]
